Tokina 100mm f2.8 macro, am I doing something wrong?

Talk Equipment - www.talkphotography.co.uk
I've had this lens arrive today and it's the first time I've used a proper macro lens.

It works fine set to either mf or af and full or limit however there's a ring near the neck of the lens which has numbers starting at 32 which is in green then they descend from 22 to 2.8 in white and I can rotate the collar to select a number.

The lens only works though if it's set to the green number 32 if I click it to any of the other numbers it displays the error message fEE (Nikon D750).

Is it faulty or am I not meant to choose any other numbers? I'm assuming they relate to aperture somehow.
