Shooting without a lightmeter

Film processing forum from Photo.net - photo.net
How often do you guys don't use a lightmeter at all? I mean like rely only on the sunny 16 rule and don't even bring it with you? is this something even possible, to really just rely on it, I mean for sunny or not so sunny situations you can get by but is it really possible to go out and understand light without ever touching a lightmeter?
