AF settings for action, D7100

Nikon DX SLR (D40-D90, D3000-D7000) Talk Forum: Digital Photography Review - forums.dpreview.com
After a lot of reading in the manual and on this forum, I am still unclear of the best AF settings for action photo.

I am tying to get tack sharp pictures of my fast dogs running towards me, focus tends to be behind their head and not spot on.

Distance between 20-3 meters, shutterspeed abt. 1/1600, aperture abt. 8, fulldaylight. Using AF-C and single central foucus point, also tried 9 and 21 focus points and CLow or CHigh.

I have the 16-85 DX lens and the 55-300 DX lens, same situation with both.

Ideas welcome!

Cheers, Erik
