Macro problem

Lens Matters - www.amateurphotographer.co.uk
I have a Nikon D300 with 18-70 Nikkor lens and Sigma 70-300 APO DG Macro. I would like to get back to some simple macro work. I also have a Vivitar 90mm f2.8 macro lens in M42 fit. Which is likely to be better - an adaptor for the vivitar or a set of extension tubes? What worries me about an adaptor is what happens to the stop down actuator pin on the M42 when in adaptor - is it covered away from any mirror movement? Can you help, please?
