Kids and learning photography/pp skills ... ?
I have a friend who has an 8 year old son. He has been given his dad's "old" compact (a Canon G9) to play with and is taking some decent images, although it's clear from talking to him that he's doing it more by luck than judgement and has little idea of how the camera's settings/knobs/dials actually work!! Having said that, he seems to have a good eye for an image and produces some nicely composed shots of landscapes, as well as images of his mates riding bikes etc. He's keen to do more sport type things, which seems natural for an active boy of his age. Friend has now asked me if I'll help the lad with a bit of post processing, teach him the basics of PS and LR and generally further his photographic education, as he (dad) has "no real idea" - his words - how these things work.!!
I'm happy to spend an hour with the boy now and again to help out, he's great kid, but have no experience of teaching kids to do anything, let alone how to use Lightroom! (no kids of my own). Has anyone ever tried to teach a bright 8 year old how to use pp software? Any hints and tips? If you have keen youngsters yourself, how accomplished are they, roughly, at that age?
I suspect that he'll pick it up remarkably quickly and very soon leave me behind, but i'm all for encouraging people to learn new skills and I'm sure I can, at least, get him started. All helpful comments gratefully received. Thanks all........
