I always get issues recording a video of lightning

When I record a video of lightning using my Panasonic TM700 or Nokia Lumia 920 phone, the part when the lightning brightens up the whole sensor, the scene is getting chopped in the middle. Why? How do we address this issue?

Here is my capture of storm this morning. Some parts of the lightning got chopped off. Is it because shutter speed is not matched?
