Editing Laptop and Software

Beginner's Corner - www.amateurphotographer.co.uk
So now I'm getting to grips with taking the actual photos I now want to start to edit them. I have a 10 year old Mac which I think I'll need to replace but my first question is what to replace it with when I have a limited budget? What medium priced laptops would people recommend of should I just save my pennies and go for a new Mac? Then there is the question of the editing software, do I go for Lightroom or Photoshop? I really have no idea where to start, which is easier and how much they even cost! I've been doing a bit of editing on my tablet using free apps but to be honest none of the ones I've found seem to be much good. Any advice gratefully received.
