Sony - Question regarding digital playback on older Sony Handycams

Camcorders - www.avsforum.com
Hi all,

(Forgive me if this isn't an appropriate place to post this - I just googled 'camcorder forum' and this was one of the top hits)

I have a box of old camcorder tapes that were recorded on a Sony Handycam DCR-TRV320E (PAL). These tapes are of various formats - Video 8, Hi8 and Digital 8. I was playing back the tapes on the camera on which they were recorded just fine, until the connection to the buttons on the top of the tape deck failed and the eject button (and all the other buttons) stopped working.

I bought a replacement camera off eBay - a Sony Handycam DCR-TRV110E (PAL) which I read should play all of the tapes that I have. When playing back the tapes on the camcorder (just using the camera, no other equipment) the Video 8 tapes play back perfectly, however the Digital 8 and Hi8 tapes (which I presumed were both recorded in Digital format on the original camera) stutter and are very pixelated - it’s like they are trying to play back too fast. However, if i record new footage on the new camera onto the Digital 8 tape and play it back it plays back just fine - the problem is only with the tapes that I recorded on the other camera (and these tapes were playing just fine on the other camera before it died). I have looked through various forums and troubleshooting guides but I can’t see anywhere how to fix this or force the camera to playback at a different speed.

When I put Video 8 tape in and playback I can see on the LCD screen that it is either playing back in LP or SP mode, but when I put one of the digital tapes in it doesn't say what mode it's playing back in - is it possible that the tapes were originally recorded in long play and they're trying to play in short play or vice versa? I can't see anywhere to change the speed the tape is playing back in. I did read on some forums that hitting the camera on the side might work, but that hasn’t helped. I've also tried using the cleaner tape that came with the camera, but that hasn't helped either.

Should this camera be able to play back the Digital8 and Hi8 tapes that were recorded on another very similar model? Or have I bought the wrong model camera? Does anyone have any idea how I can get the tapes to play back correctly?

Thanks very much in advance for any help - I'm currently working on a project to convert all my Dad's old tapes for his 70th birthday and this has got me stumped! (Note my problem isn't anything to do with the conversion equipment, I am having this problem using just the camera on its own.
